ROUND 6 GAME WRAP UPS

17 Nov 2017 by Maddison Ward

A Grade:We started the game poorly with 3 errors in the 1st innings allowing the Hills to score 5 runs. The errors weren’t hard plays, just lapse of concentration. We were able to peg 1 run back in the top of the 3rd with a walk to Vicky Mac and followed up by huge stand up triple to Megan Williams. So scores remained 5 to 1 up until the top of the 5th, where a bunt placed by the Hills was able to score 2 runs again due to an error on our behalf. Bottom of the 5th we get our hitting together with a perfectly placed running bunt by our outfielder, Gemma Letton followed up by 4 hits. Vicky Mac, Megan Williams, Emily Cattuzzo and also McKenzie Thompson got the score up to 5 for Port, but that’s where the score was to finish; the Hills victors 7 to 5. But with plenty of light at the end of the tunnel. We just have to minimize basic errors and be much more aggressive in the batter’s box to get the results we are after. I must say we are improving each week but there is still plenty of work to go. ~Butch

B Grade:A 7-0 loss again to the highly credentialed Walkerville wasn’t as bad as it read. We gave away a 4 run head start in the 1st innings, but after that we dismissed them 3 up 3 down and for the next 4 frames. Jenny Quinlan pitched well again and was well caught by Spud Krollig. Our fielding has really improved with the addition of Ella Forrester and Phoebe Hynd to the infield and also Anna Helbig is a rock at centre field nothing got past her. Jodie Cates was also the same at right field. Our batting has to improve. I’m tipping we can play finals this year, but 1st we have to play Walkerville again for the 3rd week in a row. Go Magpies. ~Milly

C Grade:Game 6 and Magpies played Southern Districts but we lost 5-0 in a tough game. Both sides went 3 up 3 down in the first and the same for us in the 2nd while SD scored a run. JJ started the 3rd with a hit but we couldn’t score her and they got 2 more runs on 2 hits. Deb got a lead off single in the 4th but again, we didn’t get her home and SD got another 2 runs to go 5-0 up. A scoreless last innings finished the game. Port played great defence to hold the strong Southern Districts line up but our bats didn’t fire. Safe hits; Deb Kennedy and Janaya Callaghan. ~Andrew

D Grade:D grade got its first win for the season against Legends with a little help of C grade players filling in for us. Isadora Roberts was on the mound and pitched the whole game. Legends managed to get safe hits against us, but our infield did a great job at fielding the ball and playing to first. We faced a slower pitcher than the previous game which was a benefit for our batting side. Everyone was confident in the batting box and was able to get a hit. We had improved with our base running, leading off and running towards the bases which was the reason we scored the runs. 10-8 ~Marcellus

U17 Black:U17 Black played Sturt Navy with a 9-3 loss, the girls played well. A few of the innings were a tie in defence with our ladies holding on well. WE struggled a little to find our hitting strength unti the last innings where we saw Mei show her talents in laying down a great bunt and Gemma pounding a 3 bag hit to bring in some runs on the board. Each week we show different aspects of our talent and show every team that we will be a force to be reckoned with when we hit our straps come March. We thank Georgia Dornbush again and Liliana from the 17 white team for filling in and for digging deep in the outfield when we finished the game off with only 8 players. You two ladies are welcomed any and every week. ~Deb & DMac

U17 White: It was good to have Mackenzie Thompson join our U17 white team this week. We played Sturt Blue who kicked off with 2 runs in their first dig. Again we struggled with the bat as we faced a second year U17 state pitcher. Paris Callaghan having the only safe hit of the game to centre field. Again there was aggressive base running as Alice Kneebone and Taylor Chillingworth able to safely steal bases. However, we do need to get more bat to ball and runners on base in order to put the pressure on their defence. Sturt Blue then successfully added 7 runs in the 2nd innings and Taylor Chillingworth was able to shut their batters down in the final innings to see the final score 9-0. We play our other U17’s Black team next week. Looking forward to a good game. ~Lynnie

U15: This week’s game showed our fighting spirit. We went into our last bat 7-2 down and we nearly made it!!! Great batting by Rianna and Charlize. Rianna found her mojo and nearly scored a home run only being tagged out at home. Macy was putting her body on the line in the field and Pigeon took 2 very hard and very high catches at centre field. Taylor and Charlize pitched well. Lots of good things were demonstrated and we will keep working hard to eliminate the errors that sometimes creep in. Good job girls! ~Chilli

U13 Black: PASC 13 Glenelg 12
A great start to the game, Holly did some great pitching and batting. Some good batting by the rest of the team. A few tense moments towards the end but good teams find a way. ~Daryl H

U13 White: Started slow but then came back with some great base running. A little bit more self-belief in the girls skills will transfer into more success. More improvement this week with fielding and eventually base running which helped give us the score of 14-14. Let’s swing the bat girls and be confident. Let’s get swinging! ~Darryl W
