ROUND 5 GAME WRAP UPS

10 Nov 2017 by Maddison Ward

A Grade: A grade started well and behind the tight pitching of Mel Lienert, kept the Seacombe hitters under control. We got runners on base early and with good pitch selection and smart hitting we quickly skipped out to a 2 to 0 lead. Good defence kept the bases clear and in the 5th innings we managed to score 1 more run to go to 3 to 0 in front. Seacombe were able to get 1 run back in top of the 6th, but again great pitching and very good fielding were able to keep it to 1 run. Final innings saw probably catch of the year by Vicky Mcfarland, running about 25 metres then diving at full stretch putting her body on the line to dismiss the team for a 3 to 1 victory. Port Adelaide’s 1st A grade win in 610 days. Trust me, it won’t be this teams only win for the year. We will be finals contenders for sure. Plenty of work still to go though ladies. ~Butch

B Grade: A poor day by most. We had a double header after the great A grade win I thought this would inspire our unit. Game 1 we played a heavily stacked Walkerville team. We struggled to hit their A grade pitcher. With Ally Bialous getting our only safe hit in a 7-0 loss. Jenny Quinlan pitched very well and Taylor Chillingworth caught well.
Game 2 vs West Torrens was a 10-0 loss with only 3 safe hits going to veteran Shar Williams and 1st gamer Ella Forrester and Charlize Callaghan. Ella came on to pitch in the 2nd innings after starting pitcher Phoebe Hynd was injured, and pitched her heart out with little return from the man in blue behind home plate. Charlize was our other stand out at left field. A special mention to Sharmaine Williams for throwing her ageing body around as if she was a kid. Changes have to be made to this squad as we have a large number of players now available, no one has a spot cemented at this point in time. ~Milly

C Grade: Magpies played Walkerville in game 5 of the C grade season and brought up our first win of the year. We batted first, KB with a lead off walk, then stole2nd and scored on a base hit from Liz. In the field we got them 3 up 3 down, Naoko struck out 2. Pitching ruled the 2nd inning with batters going in order. The bats fired up in the 3rd for a 2 out rally. Naoko smashed a solo homer followed by a walk for JJ, then another bomb to Deb, which scored us a quick 3 runs. We gave up 1 run in the bottom to lead 4-1 going into the 4th. Port couldn’t score but Walkerville got 2 runs on a walk and home run. The last inning Naoko again stepped up with a one out triple then got home on Deb’s hit. We gave up one more run before another K2 finished the game. Safe hits Naoko Waugh ( Homerun and triple) Deb Kennedy (homerun) Liz DiPaola. Naoko struck out a lazy 6 batters working well with our new catchers, Nickers. Great team game girls. YEAH OUR FIRST WIN!! ~Andrew

D Grade: We started on the diamond, fielding against Sturt Navy on diamond 7. Our fielding has improved and we now have players who are aware of plays and knowing what play needs to be made. We were able to get outs at first and infielders did a great job stopping the ground balls. Ashleigh Lemmens who is normally catching behind the plate, did a great job out at left field catching fly balls and backing up on pass balls. Our team has been confident in the batting box swinging at the ball. Unfortunately we could not get a hit from the fast pitcher that Sturt Navy had and lost on mercy rule. ~Marcellus

U17’s Black: Under 17’s Black played Glenelg. While the score line was not in our favour, a lot of positives and brilliant plays were. We had Ella pitch her first game back since injury and done very well, and have also seen Ally make a fantastic, quick transition to catcher. Two massive home run hits from Hayley not only showed us how good this young player is but lifted her team mates spirits tremendously. Britty stood up and played 2nd base for us and did a great job, as did Mei at 2nd and Meg at short stop. The two Georgia’s from the other under 17’s team filled in for us and performed great and we thank them for doing so. ~Deb

U17’s White: Our U17 white team played Sturt White on Saturday and it was pleasing to see their positive attitude towards playing the top, undefeated side. This team is full of SA Rep player ie: 8-9!! We did lose 13-2 but there was certainly more aggression in the box and on the bases, which is pleasing as we have been focusing on these elements of the game. Good pitching by Taylor for the entire game and catching by Charlize. Also great base running from Emily and Rianna and I certainly can’t finish this week’s wrap up without making mention of Petria Foley’s ripper catch at 2nd base! Keep up the good work – things are coming together! ~Lynnie

U15’s: The under 15 team played Sturt Falcons and had a solid win 17-4. Kayla started pitching to Lilliana and they did well containing the big hitters. Another highlight was Macy’s amazing game at first base (a new position for her). Emily and Charlize had a great day with the bat hitting multiple base line drive into the outfield. Others joined in too – with solid hitting by; Alice, Mia and Taylor. A great effort all round. These girls are a brilliant team and keep improving every match. ~ Chilli

U13’s Black: Port Adelaide Black vs Sturt Blue
We tried hard but only having 7 against the good teams, if you aren’t on your game they will punish you. We had a great come back at the end of the game! Our team is a work in progress, we still have a lot to work on. ~Daryl H

U13’s White: Great effort by all again this week. Some great fielding efforts and awesome base running once again. We unfortunately didn’t go hard with the bats. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!!! Also tough stuff from Dakota, Brylee and Kiarna who were all hit by pitched balls at pace, they really showed their strength by getting back out there! Well done girls let’s get out on Saturday and do it all again. ~Darryl W
