ROUND 4 GAME WRAP UPS

10 Nov 2017 by Maddison Ward

I apologise for the very late game wrap ups for round 4. I unfortunately didn’t receive all wrap ups from coaches until today! Thank you for your time and patience, Maddison Ward: The game opened up as a close event, both teams having very sharp defence. A great left handed running slap by Claire Berry getting her safe at 1st, Claire advanced to 2nd base on a walk to new USA import Vicky Mcfarland, which was followed by a hit to right field by Maddi Matschke. Claire rounded 3rd and took off to home. At home plate there was a truck like collision with the West Torrens catcher. Claire was safe at home but was injured very badly. The game was to continue and Port jumped out to a 3-2 lead assisted by a great team fielding display and great pitching by Jenny Gullidge. Special mention to 1st gamer Vicky Mcfarland who’s out fielding was a pleasure to watch and some of the best you would ever want to see. Zero errors in the field this week kept our fastly improving team in the game. Ending in a 3 all ball game and with a win on the cards in the very near future. ~Butch

B Grade: A 14-3 loss to the bottom side Glenelg was not what I was hoping for. Well done to Taylor Chillingworth starting her 1st senior game at pitching (while still in primary school). Also Brittany Ward, big effort in coming on to pitch later in the game while feeling ill. Thank you to the A grade players who came into the game late. But only 2 safe hits against some very ordinary pitching from Rebels was disappointing. While I feel we are a real chance of being very successful this season, we must start to get results back in the score book. Go Pies! Testing double header this week, ~Milly

C Grade: C Grade took on Sturt Blue in game 4 of the year but went down 5-3 in a tough game. Port batted first and started well with walks to KB and Rowdy. Liz was unlucky cracking a line drive to first that turned into a double play. Naoko stepped up with a 2 out shot to centre scoring KB. Lynnie kept it going also hitting safe to centre field but we couldn’t score again. We shut Sturt out with a k2 and Theresa grabbing a fly. Janaya’s lead off walk was followed by a safe hit to centre from Paris setting it up for Rowdy to hit a 2 bagger over left field and bring home 2 more runs. Liz got a hit to centre but that was all we could score. They levelled the game up with 3 runs on 4 hits before Naoko struck out 2 batters to end the inning. A Sturt pitching change got our batters in order then scored 2 runs on 3 hits to take a lead. The pitchers and field dominated the last 2 innings. Rowdy got play of the day turning a fly to short stop into a double play to end the game. Another great team game where we couldn’t quite get the win. Safe hits to Rowena, Liz, Naoko, Lynnette and Paris. ~Andrew

D Grade: D grade played against West Torrens on diamond 14. We started with fielding, had Kelly Sheehan starting off on the pitching plate. In the first innings fielding, the infielders did a great job easily fielding the ground balls and making plays to our first base Rush Mckay. Our tem has improved and have become confident with our batting since the first game of the season. We had batters getting on base and scoring runs. West Torren’s batting side was too good and scored a few runs against our pitcher Kelly. Isadora came on the mound and replaced Kelly on the mound and tried to hold up the batters. Unfortunately we lost. But I feel that a win is coming soon for our D grade side. ~Marcellus

U17 Black: Coach Deb Kennedy was away and fill in coaches haven’t provided a wrap up for this game. ~Maddison

U17 White: We had a good tight game against Glenelg White. It was great to hit the lead early 4-0 after the first innings – Glenelg put on 7 runs in the bottom of the 2nd and while we managed to claw back 3 runs, they did earn a run in the last with a JR hit in the centre field gap. We went down 7-8, however promising signs by our young team – a great hit by Georgia (Pigeon) Dornbusch and some good defensive plays. As a team we do need to work on the offensive side of our game. So lots of hitting, bunting and base running coming up at training girls. Many thanks to Toula and Kitey for helping out over the past weeks. We look forward to assistant coach Mackenzie Thompson joining us next weekend. ~Lynnie

U15’s: Our under 15’s had another good win against Sturt Navy 9-2. The score line was very tight for the first 3 innings and then we had a brilliant batting dig led by Macy (2 safe hits) and Lilli (2 safe hits – 1 was a 3 bagger). This helped push our runners around to score 7 runs. Kayla then came into pitch and close the game. We had to get 3 outs to keep our lead or the score would revert to a 3 all draw. Kayla pitched well and then Charlize made a brilliant force out play at 2 from short stop (Chicken would have been so proud!) and then our little star Lilli took a great outfield catch which helped seal the game. Way to go girls! ~Chilli

Port Black vs West Torrens Gold: A good game West Torrens first pitcher kept us on our toes but we ground out 4 runs to 0 with us keeping it tight in the field. The score in the end 12 to us 11 to West Torrens. Some great batting by Taj and nice stealing by Tommy. Great defence in the field good pitching by Holly, Tayla and Zowie and catching by Tayla and Marnie. A big test for us this week playing Sturt Blue. ~Daryl H

U13’s White: A 14-14 draw against West Torrens Blue. Again great aggressive batting and base running and awesome listening skills. We loved seeing new things being tried in the field once again, everyone improved this game and put in a massive effort. Let’s do it again this weekend. ~Darryl W and Maddi
